Lotus Elan

ZF S5-18/3 Transmission

PostPost by: ianashdown » Wed Jan 21, 2015 2:29 am

Having recently pulled the plug on my BDA/5-Speed Elan project I have a few parts that I acquired that I no longer have need of. One of them is a ZF S5-18/3 Transmission. This was bought from Michael (cant remember his last name) in Florida who specializes in selling these transmissions and parts for them. It has the short shifter extension and selector rods with it, although not fitted. This put the gear lever in almost the perfect spot for an Elan - well at least better than any other non-original transmission.

This is not the CR one but the one with the OD 5th gears. Ratios are:
1st 2.99
2nd 1.76
3rd 1.30
4th 1
5th 0.874

It is in very nice condition and given that these were designed for much more than Elan HP should be absolutely bullet proof!

The ZF S5-18/3 gearbox you have here is the standard box fitted into the type 81 Lotus, a Sunbeam Lotus. There are several different sets of ratios available for this gearbox.

It is a reasonably common gearbox found in several different European cars. Originally designed, I believe, for the light commercial vehicle market.

These are very popular box also suitable for 'historic' MK1 and Mk2 escort. Different gear sets are availiable with CR gear set and 1:1 top, They are an excellent choice for an elan because of the overdrive 5th.(as in this gear set, and simple fit)
They are not that at all common, and in Hi demand by the escort boys. A CR version fetches in the region of $8000+

Might be a suitable alternative to a T9 with BGH gear set.

Wish it was in the UK - I have an overdrive ZF box for my competition car and would love one for my road car too - the ratios are really good.

I wish I could afford it, as I suspect that I'll want a fifth gear eventually.

Nice box, I fitted one to my Aston DB2 that I recently sold. Mine came from an Alfa Montreal and judging by the ratios, so did this one. The fifth gear at 0.874 is not very useful but, the gears press on and off the laygear so they can be changed. I fitted a 0.8 pair and it worked well. The only weak point I discovered after overshooting a turning in a rally, I braked to a halt, slammed it into reverse, backed up to the turning and continued on the correct course. Don't do this with one of these boxes! (The slamming into reverse bit-not the rest). The reverse gear idler shaft and bearing are not strong. I subsequently learned that ZF recommends replacing them at every opportunity.
Otherwise the box is very nice, fairly tricky to overhaul compared to our wonderful Ford box. It is the box that Lotus should have fitted to the Plus 2 but were too cheap!!

Here is a excel cross reference ratio table of some of the Gear Boxed spoke about here. Please edit and add additional info you have.
I'm getting fed up looking all over the place for the relevant info and figured i would consolidate.
James

I will open a new post with the excel file available for edit & save

Believe that the "ZF S5-18/3" is NOT the gearbox fitted into the type 81 Lotus....
