Lotus Elan

Single U/J drive shafts

PostPost by: Geoffers71 » Thu Jan 25, 2018 2:46 pm

No idea where I got these, but they've been hidden in the back of the garage for years, I have certainly never used them. Don't know who made them, but they look old and a bit primitive. Can anyone throw any light on their origin? Not sure if they're worth much, but if anyone wants them........get in touch.

No sliding spline.. they seem to be welded together. I wonder how long the doughnuts last?

Early Spyder perhaps. I think their early shafts had u/js rather than cv joints?

The cyclic loading would be all over the place with ujs on 90° and donuts on 120°.
Plus plunging all taken on one donut.
I reckon they'd feel horrible on the move which is why they're not fitted to a car!

I'd be interested if they were on this side of the pond. This is the way Lotus 22 and 23 half shafts operate.
They have a 3 eared shaft out of the gearbox and the U joint connects to a yoked shaft in the upright. Wonder what it would cost to ship over the shafts minus the 4 bolt-3 bolt adapters?

I think you mean 60°. Normal driving is probably OK, but full droop may be a little rough
