New Door Arm rest parts

PostPost by: Famous Frank » Mon Jun 17, 2019 2:19 am

It's amazing how thick my skull must be at times. As some of you know, I enjoy making reproduction Elan parts. Mostly S1 and S2 but a few others too. For many years I've manufactured S1 and S2 Elan Door Arm Rest Pads with the die-electric molded design welded into the vinyl just as they left the factory. Over the last few years I occasionally get a request for the steel support under the vinyl. Now I've restored a few doors and when the customer says his or hers are rusty, I typically say "sand them down or bead blast them, respray them and continue to use them. The ones I've taken from my personal cars have all has some surface rust and would usually look like this.

Continued :

Then a number of months ago, I pulled out an old door I had in my stash and started to take it apart to look at other things. The metal support under the armrest was nearly completely gone! I was horrified! I said to myself, "so this is what my customers are talking about." Gosh I've been a jerk!!! Customers would say I don't think I can save it and I would say something stupid like "Of course you can!"

Everyone please accept my apologies!

This is a pic of what I found under the vinyl. The vinyl was actually holding everything together!

So that sent me on another quest to manufacture another part. The Metal Armrest Support! They are now complete and ready for anyone that needs one. And the are beautuful! All the holes are pre-drilled and rectangular hole is also there for the ashtray.

Hurray and thank you all !

And the wood that came out of that door armrest crumbled into a million pieces in hands. Not enough to make a template. I took apart a good door and made a new template. The wooden pieces are now available too.

Hi Frank,
That is great! I need to replace both of my doors, Would you please PM with pricing with and without the vinyl? Also, any idea where I could find the ashtrays?
Thanks,
Gale

Hello Frank,
my car is missing the wooden boards - what were they good for, als it seems to have worked without them?
PS : do you have fitting tips for your
vinyl armrest trims, like what glue to use? Don't want to spoil them, they look so nice ...
