26-S2-4 on auction June 17, 2019

PostPost by: nmauduit » Wed Jun 12, 2019 10:19 am

1965 26-S2-4 was in Austria for most of its existence and still in Austrian papers, ex Peter Peter

https://www.artcurial.com/fr/lot-1964-l ... pin-active

restored on a new chassis, not as a full out race car apparently nor in absolute respect of the original (e.g. dashboard or badges), yet likely to sell for more than the estimate

no affiliation (unfortunately)

As to the 26R authenticity, this one may make the cut for certification, but it's a bit of a "George Washington's Hammer" in terms of original 26R content. How would an appraiser tell the difference between this and a 26R copy made with credentials from a destroyed original?

Thank you Nicolas for spotting this sale, I will go and have a closer look (not with intention of bidding!). If this is indeed the Markl car, this is a picture of it racing in period:

There are some anorak subjects here on originality:

- is the red interior "factory original"
[I have looked at older posts, but I'm still curious as the subject is not very clear]
- the brake reservoirs are probably not original but does anyone have an idea who makes them ?

the price was actually at the low end of the window, €83k fees included...

https://www.artcurial.com/fr/lot-1964-lotus-elan-26r-serie-2-3946-42#popin-active

quite a few incorrect bits, by far not developped to today's standards (and if I may boringly green), but I would have thought it would fetch more nevertheless...

Thanks for the update. This car will probable be hoarded in a garage as a rebuild would be in order for racing.

It should have sold for more but, the classic car market is down, except for +2's apparently.

interesting transposition of engine number!!
should be 84 65007

84 is BRM code for Twincam, 65 year built 007 engine number.

I wonder if it originally had a red steering wheel?

I don't know, but the one shown in the car is a repro at first glance (wrong screw pattern)...

The wheel was changed from the original black to red on 26/s2/18 after I sold it--it had it's original black wheel until then----why do people do that?
