45/7895 was the first S4 dhc in March '68 Bruce, but the numbers weren't always issued in any chronological order!

Hi Alasdair,

My SS has the push button but had no handle or pull tab, so years ago, I made a wire loop just a bit larger radius than the outside of the buttons rim, that had little turn-ins at each end which go into the two outside holes of that rim, sort of like the handle on a pail. That gives me something to pull on whilst pushing in on the button. Takes both hands to open though.

Roger

PS: The dash is unique to the SS, not quite an S4. Lotus had to get rid of the handle in the SS and S4 because it, like the toggle switches replaced by rockers, protruded from the dash and could have caused injury if the passenger impacted them in an accident.

Excuse my ignorance but what is an "SS"?

Super Safety models, or SS for short, were very late Ser 3 Elans that showed a bit of what was to come on the S4. They were all Ser 3 including Weber heads and the nice arches, but had a Stromberg bulge in the bonnet. They had dual circuit brakes, rocker switches on the dash, recessed gauges, locked down seats in basket weave. They had extra reflectors at each corner and unique interior door handles, not the S4 flapper handles, all aimed at the pending US safety standards. Wheels were either bolt-on or KO with the ear of the spinners turned inward, not the Nadar nuts later used on S4s.

I meant to say the SS seats were also low back, not the S4 seats.

Ah OK.
Shame they couldn't do anything about the side impact "resistance"!!
As I rebuilt mine I couldn't believe that it's only an eggshell between us and the X5 that crushes us!
