Elan FHC Coat Hooks...Under or Aft???

PostPost by: pcarew » Thu Aug 09, 2018 3:20 am

I have an S3 SE FHC. My car came to me without coat hooks, so I thought I would add them back.

I have seen references to two different placements, so I'm confused which is correct.

Brian ('types26/36') has photos that show the hook underneath the courtesy light whereas 'Cal44' has uploaded photos that show the hook aft of the light!!

Can they both be right?

My quarter panel did have two holes, which could well be the fixing holes, below the light.

Any one know the answer to this?
my car is a type 36 (36/7512)

Cheers
Paul.

My S4 has them as in the first picture - underneath the lights. I use them to hang the seat belt buckle on.

I think both are correct. I think that early cars (65' to say 67') had them behind and afterwards late S3 & S4 FHCs had them below. As with all things Lotus, who knows when there was a changeover? I think they look nicer with the hooks below but that is just my take on it.

Paul,
The picture you have is of my Sprint, here is a picture of my old 67 S3SE SS with the seat belt hung on the hook, I dont know if the earlier cars had them aft but I agree that it looks better below the int light (just my opinion of course)

My car, #6138, has them behind the lights.

Thanks everyone for shedding some light on this. Talk about a quick response. Terrific :-)

As my quarter panel board had holes underneath the headliner fabric below the light, I'm going to go with that.

Cheers

My car, a 1968 S4 has the hook beneath the light, I also think it is for the seat belt rather tan a coat.

Another point is that the hooks are attached (on my S3 at least) by screws which pass through the trim panel and into rivnuts in the body, and so help to support the panel. These rivnuts in the body should show the original position of the hook and can be seen in the middle of the picture below
