68 +2 windscreen seal

PostPost by: wotsisname » Wed Dec 05, 2018 12:00 pm

All,
Another windscreen seal question , seems to be a popular area of interest.

For a '68 +2.
Has anyone experience of using the classic capri seal with a filler strip, rather than the chrome surrounds ?

It is possible to get the capri screen as a one piece seal with moulded corners.
I understand the other available options (eg SJS, Sue Miller) require the screen to be mitred ?
I am assuming that the slot where the filler strip goes will be deeper for the capri seal, will this lead to a loose fit as I don't have the chrome surrounds ?
The infill I have in mind is wider and flatter than the rear screen type and is very close to the one that came off the car many years back

Hi,
I have a 68 +2 with the classic capri screen and seal. Neither the screen seal or the filler strip are mitred. When fitting the parts, which will be supplied off the roll, they must be cut over length by 1/8" to the foot, so the manual says. I would have thought that those supplying the seal would also have supplied the correct filler strip. I thought the seal and strip were Ford items.
If fitted correctly it will not leak for many years.
Cheers

John, Thanks for the reply.. I think I need to put a bit more info..

The seal I am considering is supplied by a Classic Capri Owner club. It is a single piece seal and the corners are pre-formed.. this is , I believe how the early +2 was supplied. They sell it with the intention that the owner fits the chrome surround that the classic capri (and early +2) has as OE. They can't advise whether it will work with an infill such as is used for the rear screen. I believe The surround is pushed into the seal, which has a deeper "cut" for this. so my question is whether anyone has use a seal like this with an infill.

I also see that the usual suppliers supply from the roll and I was assuming this might require a mitre as per the rear screen... sounds like this isn't the case... it is certainly a cheaper option

Adrian,
Ah, I think you mean the seal for the very early +2's, say the first couple of hundred. I suspect they would all be 1967 cars. They do have a metal chrome filler piece. My car is March 68 and does not have this type of seal.
I'll try and post a pic tomorrow of the seal in my car. It's also the seal for a Scimitar SE5A which has the same screen.
You may have to fit whatever you can get hold of.
Cheers

Adrian,

If you don't have the stainless cover trim don't buy the Consul rubber as it won't work with the standard type compression filler strip.

Sue Miller sold me a rubber profile which works very well and uses the standard compression strip and it was not expensive. As already said you don't need mitre it.

Have you already bought the Consul rubber?

Cheers

For me,
1. on the 1968 +2 that i had was just the standard Rubber Seal with a Plastic Trim nothing special.
2. BUT on the 1970 +2S i had the Windscreen Seal was Special with the Stainless Steel trim( consul/capri).
3. On the 1973+2S130 i had it was different again with Bonded Screen and Bonded Special Plastic Trim.

Adrian,
Here is a pic of the seal and filler that I am using. I have a black filler piece but that was my choice.
Cheers

Thank you all,
I haven't yet bought the seal and it seems like I shouldn't.
I'll be ordering from Sue Miller or SJ as I'm hoping to fit all of this before Christmas

If anyone is looking for the classic capri seal the ford classic capri & consul owners club have it in stock, you have to join the club (half price until March 19) first. it comes in around ?127 with membership and UK postage.

cheers again

Hi

I have used the seal as shown by elanman999 with a chrome filler strip.
If I remember I cut it and fitted to the screen glass first then fitted the seal only into the body with a black silicon sealant, allowed it to cure before installing the glass
The reason I used this was at the time I needed to replace the screen the available replacement chrome trim was poor.
As its been in place over twenty years without a problem I happy to retain it
