S3 coupe parcel shelf mounting

I removed my parcel shelf to access the top of the rear struts but the mounting of the shelf doesn't seem
correct. I had to pull back glued in carpeting to access several mounting points, as seen in the pictures.

Is this the correct way to mount this shelf? It seems to me that it would make more sense to have the
shelf sit on a bracket, of sorts, rather than mounting it straight onto the back bulkhead.

on my S4 coupe the rear shelf is resting in a similar fashion for the front, on small steel clips stuck under the rear window rubber for the rear ... very light but it does not move.

Aha! Mine were screwed into the masonite bulkhead, which required pulling the carpet back to get to the
screws. Maybe they shouldn't have been?

well now that you're saying this I'm not 100% sure... must be getting old, it's been a few years since I last tinkered with it, and now the car is stored away so I can't look if there are screws or screw holes (in case I did not screw it back). Other issue is that I had a "pro" upholstery shop do the carpet, they may have messed the original installation...

Yes back of the shelf sits on clips mounted around the rear glass mounting fibre glass flange. The front of the shelf sits on the vertical board and is secured with the clips you show under the carpet.

Long ago I drilled a couple of holes in the parcel shelf and inserted rubber plugs as fitted in the DHC to give access to the top of the struts without removing the "parcel shelf". Who ever puts a parcel on it ?????

Thanks guys. I recently found a private website (can't find it now) about a FHC restoration and it showed
several 90 degree brackets mounted on the bulkhead and the parcel shelf sitting on those. I'm thinking
velcro here. :-)

Now theres a good idea. Having to take the parcel shelf out to get to the rear shock adjusters means they're only adjusted whenever I strip the suspension down.

Mine are pop riveted - easy to drill out and replace quickly.

Greg:

I noticed your 2018 post about considering velcro to hold the front of the rear parcel shelf in place instead of the hard to remove brackets. Did you do this, and how did it turn out?

Any increase in squeaks or rattles caused by the velcro vs the brackets?

I am about to remove mine to cut 5" holes to install a pair of 6.5" speakers, and thought the velcro idea would be great as far as future removal and access.

Thanks

Bill, no, I haven't done this job yet. It'll be done when I redo the carpet, however, I was recently looking
at the shelf, thinking of this job because I may relocate the front tabs but I don't see any reason why it can't work.
The shelf is just sitting on the front and rear tabs and really doesn't 'rattle' or move around when driving.
