+2 steering wheel

PostPost by: daverubberduck » Wed Jul 19, 2023 1:22 pm

Pics show the steering wheel that was in this early +2, in fact it was Graham Arnold's +2. Does anyone know if this is the standard wheel that goes in early +2s? I have a 1969 +2 and the steering wheel is not like this. Also we can't figure out how to fit the horn press on, it doesn't seem to go (the car was in bits when found).

No expert in +2, but horn push (the black plastic with lotus logo) is not standard.
The holding piece looks original
Missing the contact pin ?
Steering wheel "kinda" looks correct.
There should be a cable coming from steering wheel.

But that is an early +2, so the horn push is on the end of the indicator stalk.
So the wiring is in the indicator connection block and nothing to do with the steering wheel centre.
Here is an original early +2 steering wheel. Sorry the wheel is upside down but it's the only pic I have.

John, OK, but you would agree that the hornpush button does not look correct ? Looks like those for Moto Lita steering wheels.
Also, "I have been thinking", the horn push holding plastic looks like the ones from later Elan/2seaters, flat and made out of plastic. not sure when they came into usage, but the one on your picture looks like the earlier, higher, metal piece.

gherlt, yes I do agree with you that the horn push Dave is holding is not the correct one.
Unfortunatley I can't find any pics from a later +2.
Cheers
John.

Thanks for your responses. The car in question belongs to a friend of mine. My own 1969 +2 has a steering wheel the same as John's above.

I have trawled through a load of pics of steering wheels and cannot find anything like this horn push, so it's a bit of a mystery. BTW a good resource for looking at pics of cars is UK Sports Cars UK (link below). They have detailed pics of all their cars for sale and also the ones that are sold, so there's a lot of pics there.

Dave, here is the 14” wheel that was on my Elan when I bought it. I think the wheel is a fake as the Chapman signature is not as crisp as the +2 wheel but the horn push is of the flatter type and is marked Momo on the rear face.
Also in a book by Mike Taylor, “Lotus Elan, the complete story” there are some pics of the flatter type of horn push.
Cheers
John.

I have a very late 75 Europa and my horn push logo came in the Lotus green and yellow colours despite most Elan, +2s and Europas having a black logo horn push. Jim

Thanks John, that horn push looks the same as the one my friend is holding. Not sure if that means it's a genuine Lotus part because you say that your steering wheel is fake. Anyway, thanks for the pic.
