S2 Gearbox

PostPost by: jean » Tue Nov 09, 2004 6:42 pm

Hello to all there,
after breaking my gearbox on a 1964 elan S2 (type26), i am after parts.
I've been told this type use the same gearbox than some Ford models but can't be sure if it's the Corsair , the Cortina or another one.
If someone in the know can help on this one, it'll be very much appreciated!
Thanx.

Jean,
The Elans did use the MK1 1500 cortina gearbox but several sets of ratio's have been used, according to the books I have read and the cars I have seen the S1 Elans used the ratio's stright from the standard 1500 (3.5 1st gear) BUT a close ratio was available (2.5 1st gear)
The early S2 also had the standard 1500 ratio's but was changed to the semi-close ratio (cosair GT 2000E ratio's 2.97 1st gear) sometime in production, the close ratio was also an option.
As standard the S3 and 4's had the 2000E ratios, if the box has the 2000E ratios it should have an I.D. tag with several numbers and letters but should include the numbers "2821E" this box was continued untill the end of production except of course for the 5speed box. A standard box would be 2820E if I remember correctly.
Several versions of this box have been used in Cortina's with different gear change positions, the one used in the Elan had the gear lever going stright into the box with no remote housing.
