Prop shaft balancing

PostPost by: alaric » Sat Feb 18, 2006 4:07 pm

Hi all.

I am progressing with the rebuild of my +2. I've fitted a Sierra T9 box in place of the original, and have a replacement +2 4 speed prop shaft from ebay. I have to fit a new spline to the leading end of the shaft, and have new needle rollers for it.

My query is what to do about balancing? Obviously I have no alignment marks as the prop and gearbox are not from my car. Should I get the prop balanced now, or wait until it's in the car and take the whole car to a balancing shop? If the latter, has anyone done this and who should I go to - I'm in Dorset? This must be a common kit car problem.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Sean.

Hi,

before you fit the new universal joints, mark the exact position of the different parts in order to assemble it in the same place.
you can do this by punching a smal dot in the aligning parts so you can lign it up again when assembling if you know what I mean.
afterwards you take the whole drive shaft to a balancing place.
do not worry about the gearbox end or the diff end.
so you do the balancing outside the car, not fitted to the car.
hope this helps,

cheers
