Help!! Refitting Elan +2 engine and gearbox!!

Anyone got any tips on how to refit the engine and box in one unit?

Or should it be done seperately?

Cannot get back of the box up into the tunnel as sump fowling on the rack, or bellhousing on the anti roll bar!! Maybe I have to remove 1 or both of those?

Thanks

Colin

I find it much easier to fit them seperately...

I have usually taken out the engine/gearbox seperatly but fitted them as a unit, I find this method easier although others will disagree, I dont recall it being too difficult although it is a tight fit and the engine/gearbox has to be angled very sharply and rotated slightly. (no oils in units) Get some one to guide it as you lower it, I have never taken off the sump but I think the anti roll bar needs to be off (cant remember for sure)
Have as little on the engine as possible i.e. carbs/distributor/fuel pump/engine fan/engine mountings etc. and dont forget to lay the exhaust manifold loosely in place (it can catch) but it can also be a pain to fit later.
Good luck.

Brian thanks for the tip on the exhaust manifold . That was difficult to get in. I should have done like you said!!

Well it is all in, but no way would they go in as a unit. Even putting the box in on it's own it was a pig to get the prop on. No major issues putting the engine on to the box, so in my opinion I would fit as seperate units.

Thanks for the help

Colin

There should be an access hole, covered by a rubber plug under the carpeting, for guiding home the propshaft/transmission spline. It's on the right side of the trans/frame vertical wall (on US versions) near the seat.
