Gearbox swap over

PostPost by: GrUmPyBoDgEr » Fri Jan 19, 2007 2:05 pm

Short & sweet.
I'm planning to do a gearbox change.
What's the best way:
Engine & gearbox out in one or engine then gearbox?

It will come out either way. It will be a lot easier though if you pull the engine first then the gearbox. The problem is that the engine and gearbox together will lock on the rear of the bell housing where the stock engine mount to the chassis. It is difficult to rotate (around the crankshaft centerline) the engine with the gearbox attched to clear them while lifting both together. I try to remove the 4 bolts that hold the shifter in place as it gouges the paint when you pull them both together (this has to be done through the shifter hole and is also a pain in the a$$). I believe that it has to lean towards the exhaust side.
If yo have a Spyder tubular chassis I don't think it matters much.

If the crossmember below the engine is removed, can you remove/install
the engine/gearbox as one?

Thanks guys,
my car has a Spyder chassis where "everything is removable" so I guess the answer is engine + gearbox all in one.
Now who's got an engine hoist
