Colour of Gearbox?

PostPost by: john.houston » Tue Jan 30, 2007 4:26 pm

Hi. It sounds like a daft question but my body off restoration is coming along quite well now.The previous owner has done so much to make my life easy.I dont know if he painted the 4 speed gearbox or not. It is british racing green. Was this the colour it came out of the factory? Thanks...

1989 +2.

and on the same note, what's the paint colour of my late eighties SPyder spaceframe chassis?
(sorry, don't mean to hijack your thread, just thought some paint code genius might know both answers... :-)

This one should be interesting. I've never seen a BRG box. Black or no paint are the only originals I'm aware of.

My original gearbox is green. Very similar to the S/E cam cover.

Peter.

If your Spyder chassis is red then the paint is VW "Mars red"
Please do a check on the colour before buying because there are in fact two types of WV "Mars red", one being a shade darker, or lighter depending on which you look at first

The replacement gearbox I put in my Series 4 is green; the one it replaced was grey. Go figure. :?

John you are lucky re. your previous owner. Mine went out of his way to ruin my quality of life. I feel like a bomb disposal expert trying to dodge his booby traps

I am the original owner of a 69 Elan & my box has a very small amount of green paint left on it. I am also looking at repainting it as part of the restoration but don't know what the paint code is. It must be an old Ford colour as I don't think it is quite as dark as the typical BRG.

I painted my bell housing and tail extension BRG. Then I painted the gearbox and starter pinion cover black. Finally, I polished and clear coated the aluminum gearbox top cover, the collar on the end of the tail extension, and the speedometer angle drive.

Could be the nicest looking 4-speed on the planet. Too bad nobody can see it now that it's installed in the car!

The gearbox in my S2 was grey, the same as the engine block and sump. I just painted them for the first time last week. I just used a Dupli-Color "Cast coat Iron" which is a little darker than the original.

I have rebuilt the gearbox in my 1972 +2s130 to the original color. Hammerite green- - - looks metallic and is the lighter color.
Also on my 67 s3 SS there are hints of the same color still on the box.
