+2 4 speed gearbox source?

Hello everybody.

I normally mess with elites and eclats, but I've been given the lovely job of replacing the 4 speed box in a '72 +2.

From the noises it makes I imagine its scrap or close to it, so I'm probably looking for a replacement box. I cant find any conclusive info - anyone able to tell me what ford (or other?) car this came from?

Is there a known list of lotus specific parts in the box that I would need to transplant?

alternatively, anyone have a good 4 speed for sale?

thanks very much,

Conrad

Conrad,

Alternatively it would be worth phoning Susan Miller 01728 603307.

She may have one but could also almost certainly arrange the rebuild of the one you have.

Its a Ford 2000E three rail box, first used on the Cosair 2000 GT.
2OOOE boxes were used on several Ford cars, Cortina 1600E, twin cam Escort, RS Escort, Mexico, some Capri's etc. but it was also available as a single rail and with a remote gearchange, the Elans do not use the remote gearchange.
The Mk 1 Cortina had the same box but not the semi close ratio's although the Lotus Cortina had both a close ratio and a semi close (2000E)
Do an internet search for 2000E boxes.

Thanks everyone for the help. Yes, I've got my eye on the one on ebay. I had heard it was a 2000E box, but it doesnt look as i remember it in my capri. Was a long time ago...

If i get stuck, any thoughts on using the cortina box with the wrong ratios, at least in the short term until the engine is next out? I would imagine i could find one of them pretty easily, and given the amount Of Trouble Usually Serious the owner has had recently with the car, a cheap solution would be preferable in the short term.

cheers,

Conrad

The Capri will probable not look the same as I think it had the remote gearchange tail housing (alumimium) and a different bellhousing (cable clutch) I think it was also a single rail box, I was refering more to the ratio's (the 2000E ratio's are identified by a tag 2821E)
As far as I remember most of the other boxes I mentioned were also cable clutch with remote gear change.
You could use the Mk 1 Cortina box as the early S1/2's Elans were fitted with them BUT check the input shaft as the early cars used a bigger spigot bearing/bush. I dont think the +2's had the larger spigot.
Unless you get a box for an Elan I think you might end up having to change parts with an other box.
Brian.

Rebuilding the box is also an option AFAIK all the bit are available. You will need a press, if you don't have one any decent gearbox shop should be able to do this for you. BTW I know Tony Thompson offers a full rebuild service.
