Gearbox Identification

PostPost by: smo17003 » Wed Mar 24, 2010 7:45 pm

Just won a gearbox off of Ebay - anyone know if the I.D. tag spells 2000E or not?

The tag is stamped 2821E A FOB 5F 24

I seem to remember that all Cortina MK2 4-speed's were ID'd 2821E so I'm guessing that the 'A' is the important bit of information.

I don't have it yet so unable to do the input/output test at the moment.

Apparently it's a never fitted NOS unit, so if it is 2000E I've got myself a bargain - fingers crossed.

The 2821E refers to the semi close ratio set but it was fitted in several cars (see below) and was known as the 2000E box but as the gear set was fitted to verous cars the gear change position, input and output shaft can be different, example: the Elan has no remote gearchange but most of the other cars do. Sorry but dont know what the other numbers/letters mean but I would think it refers to the applications and years.

4-speed, all synchromesh 2.972, 2.01, 1.397, 1 to 1. Reverse 3.342. Known as the 2000E box. Fitted to Lotus Cortina 1966-70, Corsair 2000E, 1966-70, Escort twin cam 1968-71, RS1600 1970 on, Mexico 1970 on, Cortina 1600 G.T. 1968-70, Cortina 1600E, 1968-70, Capri 1600 G.T. 1969 - , Capri 2000 G.T 1969 --, Cortina MK3 1600 G.T. 1970 -

Hi

I am pretty sure U have a 2000E gearbox. with the ratios 2.972, 2.010, 1.397, and 1.0. I checked the gearbox I put in my 1969 Seven (1970-71 vintage for the gearbox) it had the above ratios and I recorded all the numbers on the various bits and they are detailed below

71BG7006HA gear-box casing right hand side
1F4 gear box casing right hand side
OF15A2 tail shaft cover
69BG7A040AA tail shaft cover
IF4 tail shaft cover
FoMoCo tail shaft cover
1A16A2 gear box casing left hand side
021E AE tag
FOB 1D08
2821E 7050 input shaft cover
1F7 input shaft cover
WYF J4076 116E 7K006B gear lever extension

As the other post said the various accessories associated with the box may be different but the basic box is the 2000E

If u ever find out what all the numbers mean it would be interesting! but as long as it fits and works--no worries really

Hope its the one U want
regards

Put it in 1st., turn the inshaft and count the turns of the outshaft.... two small dots of white tip-ex makes it easier for you ..... :D

I now have the Ebay box and from the input/output test in 1st gear I am getting 3.5 turns at the input. The box is tagged 2821E A and it is a new (not recon.) old stock unit. I have also borrowed a Cortina MK2 parts manual and, as I suspected, all 4-speed manual boxes have 2821E as part of the part number. My Ebay box being for, it would appear, a 1300cc Cortina. According to the parts book the Cortina GT/Lotus/1600E box has either an 'S' or 'AB' suffix. My conclusion is that 2821E alone, does not identify a box as 2000E or semi-close ratio or anything else, other than it is a Cortina/Corsair gearbox, and that it is the suffix letter/s that identify the application.

Hopefully all is not lost as I now have a box with all new selector forks, synchro's, etc. that I can use if necessary in my original box.
