Thanks Roger
Do you think a 3/4" wooden dowel would work OK? I haven't torn the gearbox apart yet. Just getting my ducks in a row.

Maybe someone has a layshaft they can measure for you? It needs to be a close fit otherwise you are wasting your time and better off without it. Grease works fine and I'd recommend it even if using a dummy shaft.
It's no big deal if a couple of rollers get knocked out of place. If this happens (unlikely if you are careful) the layshaft will jam whilst you are pushing it through so you'll know you've got a problem. You need to stick the thrust washers in place with grease too before you position the laygear in the bottom of the case.
If you've got a problem or the needle rollers go walkabout it's no big deal to withdraw the mainshaft and start again.

From an online industrial supply house (MSC) ordered a length of drill rod a few thousandths smaller in diameter than the layshaft and cut it to length. Unfortunately I don't remember the diameter I bought but I will check later. It was inexpensive and works perfectly.

Russ - would you mind advising on the diameter you bought?
