Diff Input Shaft Bearing Replacement

PostPost by: Hawksfield » Mon Aug 19, 2019 11:03 pm

Hi
If you don't set it up as stated by Rohan u will get all sorts of transmitted sounds to the diff nose including noise from the propshaft. As you have had the engine out and now the diff is noisey you need to check the propshaft and the instalation.
Check everything before you pull the diff

Thanks all for the comments - much appreciated.

The hubs were at normal ride height (rear struts on axle stands - wheels off) when the tests were done, & all the other suggested areas of potential concern were eliminated.

Decision made ... the diff is coming out & going back to Tony Thompson for a full inspection & overhaul as necessary. Should be back & fitted in time for my final sprint entry in September (at Snetterton)

I will try to remember to report back with the findings!

Dave.

Diff was stripped at TTR yesterday, & yes ... knackered pinion bearings (as suspected)

Everything else is fine, & the diff is now being rebuilt with all new bearings & seals (should be back this week)

Up to now I've been using Millers Motorsport 80w/140 BM oil in the diff (has a Quaife ATB fitted) Any thoughts on this .. or an alternative?

Thanks.

Hopefully they won't use the same brand/type of bearing they used the first time.

The bearing will likely have failed due to someone not setting the preload correctly. It's usually only Timken or Koyo supplying bearings in this size. Both are reputable manufacturers

Certainly the man who has rebuilt the diff this time at TTR was quite critical of some aspects of how it was done previously. His immediate reaction on stripping the diff was along the lines of "this wasn't rebuilt by me", & I was able to confirm that it was done before he started working at TTR.

Should be done by now & on the way back by courier.
