Tailshaft oil seal to prop yoke

Hello

I'm just about ready to start my engine after removing it to replace the gearbox and all the usual things relating to bottom end oil leaks. I was about to start it to check for oil leaks but havent installed the propshaft yet and it occured to me that it will probably pour oil out of the gearbox tailshaft without the propshaft yoke being properly fitted. Am I correct and I do need to install the prop first?

Yes, oil will come out without the prop shaft being fitted.

I definetly won't be doing that then especially with the price of the Redline gear oil.

Why don't you leave the gearbox in Neutral? :?:

Even with the gearbox in neutral the input gear, laygear and mainshaft gears are all rotating and churning oil. The only way to be sure the gears have stopped would be to the hold the mainshaft stationary, disengage the clutch and have the transmission in gear. Note by just disengaging the clutch you can't guarantee the gears aren't still turning because there may still be light drag of the clutch plate against the flywheel or pressure plate facings.

Without the propshaft fitted you can't easily hold the mainshaft stationary.

In summary - just fit the propshaft!
