This rear hub retaining nyloc was supplied to me a few years ago (I can’t remember which supplier) and is unused. When checking I found it is too high and not fully engaging the thread - the nyloc that came off was half height. What thread size is this so I can get a replacement please?

The rear hub nuts are 5/8" UNF and were originally of the 'Thin' profile. As far as I can tell these generally are no longer available, only the full height nuts.
My original thin nuts were of about 0.550" high compared with the full height nut of 0.750" height.
If you have access to a lathe, the full height can be readily reduced to the thin height taking care to keep the thread perpendicular to the new face as picture.
I am happy to machine these for you if you cover postage cost.

Spalding Fasteners have 5/8 UNF `half` Nyloc nuts in stock in quantities of five upwards. They are on ebay just now. Although these might be too thin and a slightly shortened full nut may be better.

Thank you both, Gary for your kind offer and Eric for the advice and info on Spalding Fastners. Before I ask Gary to machine some nylocs for me, what is the general opinion please about the safety of using half height nyloc rather than original 0.550” height in this situation - a genuine risk or just theoretical? Which would you use?

Watch out for the grade of nut, can’t recall torque but its high.

That would depend on what the half height measured. I certainly would not use anything thinner than the original height.

On many occasions, I have filed down nylocks to suite a particular application. Nothing difficult in that, just decent files required and a good eye.

Thanks. The torque is 100-110 lb ft. What grade should I select, please?

Rear hub nuts and the thick washers are both available from Kelvedon, SJS, etc. I would expect that they are correct for size and grade if they value their reputation as suppliers.

In an ideal situation you want the thickest nut that gives you two threads sticking out the end.

Old engineering rule of thumb, 1.5 x diameter of bolt for amount of engaged thread for max strength.

Just to provide feedback and complete the thread for future reference:
Spyder and SJS supply the hub nyloc machined to the correct height, But Kelvedon supply a full height nyloc to be machined.
