Hi,
does anybody know a company who is willing to re-chrome some pitted alloy rear light surrounds? :huh:
Problem is, they need to know exactly of which alloy materials they're made of. Would also be interested in buying some new ones if available...<span style='color:red'>Merry christmas, Volker</span>

they are made of Mazac which .. is terrible to try to rechrome.. most poeple try to polish out the pits, which is not succesful, as the rims become too thinn, it is possible to solder the pits and polish of teh chrome but you can tell. Basicly dipping the rim to remove the chrome dissolves the Mazac.
They were die cast and tooling for that is too expensive really, i looked at various processes... a mate has a specialist casting plant.. and to maintain the tolerances for fit.. they would cost too much to make viable. some people cast them in white metal.. but really... ain't worth it.
I may look again at doing some.. I do have the light to body gasgets though, and the other bits but no spare rims.

Have you tried the usual suspects for new ones? .........Not sure if they are available still?
I think I've seen new ones come up on Ebay
It might be worth contacting other suppliers of old car parts, particularly those specialising in old Vauxhalls.

Any ideas/thoughts about using injection molded plastic? Plastics can be chromed and can look just as nice if done properly.

My local chromer, Paul's Plating in Evans City Pa., redid mine with no problem. They came out perfect.

FWIW - The place that I took my rear light surrounds to be chromes was PG plating in Cincinnati, OH. They've been in business for 60-70 years and have been written up in Hot Rod magazines. That said, they fill minor pits with Lead, then do a 5 layer chroming process: Copper, 2 Zinc and then 2 Chrome. Came out beautiul, about $35.00 each.
They've done all my chrome work on several cars for 25 years.
