Earthing question

PostPost by: stuartgb100 » Thu May 04, 2006 8:09 pm

Having removed the radiator on my Sprint, I can now see several wires (2 maybe 3) which appear to be earths, fixed through the impact clamp, flexible coulping areas of the steering system.

If they are earthing points, then now is a good time to remake them. They are wires which locate under the head of each bolt. So I will have to completely remove each bolt to do this.

Providing I do this one bolt at a time, is this ok? Any risks etc?

Regards,
Stuart.

If the wiring is original, all earthed wires should be Black.

Those steering column wires serve the sole purpose of a horn circuit ground/earth. They bypass the resistance of the clamp and the insulation of the rubber coupling.
Note: electrically, they only connect the steering column to the steering rack. You still need to ground/earth the rack (in order to complete the horn circuit).

The car was rewired by the PO.
The wires in question are black
This may explain why the horn is not working.

The should be one wire that "bypasses" the steering column UJ. Then another that goes from the rack to the chasis, as the rack is located by rubber bushes. As has already been stated these form the ground connection for the horn.
