Can someone give me an idea to what is wrong with the oil pressure gauge on my Elan +2. As soon as I start the engine the gauge goes straight up to max and stays there. The car seems to be running fine, but I would like it to read true for obvious reasons. Thanks

Depends if electric or capillary type . If electric it could be either a faulty sender or the gauge which could also be effected by the voltage stabiliser which would also send the fuel gauge high . If capillary type it can only be the gauge faulty , unless the oil pressure releif valve is jammed shut in the oil pump .

If you find it's the voltage regulator/stabiliser,i'll be putting a solid state converted jobbie on ebay shortly,mounted in an original case,correct to 1% and guaranteed for 12 months

On closer inspection I?ve noticed that when I turn the ignition on, without starting the engine, the rev counter goes up to 2000. Do you think this is due to the voltage regulator/stabiliser?

Still need to know if your car has electric or capillary gauge . If electric then maybe an earth return problem effecting the gauges .

I was under the impression all +2's had electric oil gauges (at least in standard form) but check if it has a capillary tube and fitting or a sender with electrical connections screwed into the block just right of the distributor.

Guys,

I have a late 73 Elan with a capilliary gauge. Below the distributor is the take off for the gauge. It's a connection into the block for an approx 1/8th inch black plastic tube (original as far as I know). This tube will run through the bulkhead to the back of the dash.

If it was electric, it would have some kind of a sender unit with a wire attached.
