Hello all - I've recently bought a '68 S4 DHC so thought I'd say hello before I have a whole host of inane questions to ask!


In the meantime I was thinking of investing in a battery conditioner, does anyone have any advice and/or recommendations?

If you are in the UK go to Halfords. They do a simple plug top unit that costs about 15 quid and does the job very well. I have used these on my Elan and Porsche for the last 5 years and never had any problems.

Yes I know there are more exotic version available but I do not see any advantage of spending ?80 when ?15 does the job

i use one on my sprint they are very good particularly on the elan with the battery in the boot you tend to get a large volt drop in the cables so the battery needs to be tip top. I would suggest caution with some of the cheap items as they may permanently trickle charge without any regulation on voltage. When the battery reaches full charge the recommended max continuous float charge voltage needs to drop to 13.8V. Have had good results with the Car Builder unit 01580 891309

I'll give another vote for the Race Technology ones. They are quite chunky compared to some of the cheapy (and not so cheap) offerings and they are British designed and built. Only drawback is the pathetic crocodile clips but that is soon sorted.

My Drophead Sprint has one on all the time during the winter layup. Kept the battery in tip top condition for years.

In my experience they dont employ genius's at Halfords but as this subject has come up I have been looking on the net, if you go into Halford's web site and search "Draper" they list a conditioner.
