Possible Electrical commonality

PostPost by: stuartgb100 » Mon Aug 17, 2009 6:39 pm

Pulled the engine and box from my Sprint last Easter, and only just putting all back together.

There seems to be an electrical fault that was not present before.

Flashers, ignition light and fuel guage are not working, but car starts fine.

Before I launch in with my big feet, any ideas on what may be amiss ?

The only thing I have noticed so far is that I changed the speedo cable at the same time,
to which I had cabled the voltage regulator for the fuel guage (etc).

This vr is now hanging in space, and I find a red female spade also hanging free.
The limits of travel suggest this free wire was never attacheg to the vr.

Help much appreciated, before I go for it !!

Regards and thanks,
Stuart.

I'v not checked the diagram Stuart, But are those items not ign' switch fed, via the fuse box? Start simple and check for fuse blown and bad connection.

Report back. I am sure someone will have the book out soon! :D

The Voltage stabiliser must be earthed to work you can damage them if not.
also Smiths VS need to be fitted level with fixing hole at bottom .

The voltage stabiliser does have to be earthed (from the casing), but that should only account for the fuel and temp gauges not working. If the flashers and ignition light are not working too, then it's another problem - or more than likely, more than one problem.

Earth the VS first, then look at fuses. If you have an ammeter, is it registering positive after starting? A blown ignition bulb will stop the alternator from charging the battery (long story) - check that bulb.

Still nothing? Wait for the next more useful advice to come along...

Todays top tip: create a spooky lighting effect by forgetting to switch off and remove your torch from the nose area before refitting the grille.

Yep sounds strange but it's one of the facts I remember 30 odd years on when I did my time as a sparks working for Lucas main agent we were Smiths agents too (Trust me I am a auto electrician) .

You should never have told us that Neil. You are now 'the man' for lecy quizzes...

Hear that boys?

I think he may have a 'supply' problem to the ign sw. Or a duff sw?? Just a thought.

Sorry for not getting back to this thread, but work (at work) has completely taken over from work (at home) for the past two weeks.
In the meantime, the MOT has expired and a planned week's holiday went out the window ....... bollards ***

I have today off, and the weekend to sort this.

Regards,
Stuart.

Well, the posted problems are sorted and a new one has manifested itself (new post refers).
Basically the wires were incorrectly connected to the voltage stabiliser.
So when I removed the speedo cable back in April, I must have dislodged them, and then incorrectly reconnected them.
Dumb.

Regards and thanks,
Stuart.
