Rad fans , switches...am I trying to complicate things

Whist out in the car today I had a eureka moment.
I had intended to control my fan with a Revotec in line controller , opting to move away from the otter switch and its necessary manual overide but I suddenly thought ...Why?
The original engine was designed to have a mechanical fan running all the time. I have a manual overide switch and the car runs virtually at the thermostat temp with this on. I switch on when the engine warms up and leave it on unless I'm on the open road at 60mph.
My question is that with the thermostat being the brains of the engine as far as temperature is concerned , by installing a switch with another temperature setting would this create another brain as it were and consequently have two brains not knowing what the other is doing!!!
Or is the way to automate the switching on the overide switch, ie have the switch come on at thermostat temp?
Any thoughts gratefully received!

Terry,
I think there was an answer in your earlier Otter post.
The way I did it was to choose the thermostat I wanted (in my case 72 degrees).
Once fitted, I ran the engine up to normal temperature - a few runs out will soon show the normal
temperature with the car moving (not stationary).
I want the car up to normal temperature but not getting too hot.
So I set the electronic fan control to kick in approx 10 F degrees above that.
It then kicks in and drops the temp by about 5-6 degrees.
If you set it too close, it will end up fighting the thermostat.
Regards,
Stuart.

Susan only had a 76degree, I ordered a 74degree from TTR when it turned up it was a 75(!!!!) You can get a 74degree from eBay QH QTH101 or from Steve at SJS but for the ultimate if you can find one (I did!) a 71degree QTH170 (For a Ford Transit)

Terry,
72 degree thermostat fitted and 75 Degree ON/70 degree OFF thermatic fan switch also fitted. The thermostat opens at 72, the fan starts at 75 and drives the temp' down toward 70, as this occurs the thermostat starts to close, at 70 the thermostat is closed and the fan stops, the temp' starts to go up again and the whole cycle is repeated.
Swap the thermatic switch for an 80 ON/75 OFF. The thermostat opens, and remains open, at 72. As the temp' climbs to 80, the fan starts and drives the temp' down to 75 and the fan stops. The temp' is thus controlled by the fan whilst the thermostat remains fully open. If the thermostat manages to hold the temp' below 80, the fan will not start.
Colin.

How do you mean fighting the thermostat. As I understand it the fan would only make the radiator more efficient, nothing more?

The QTH170 one I found was exactly like a QTH101. However , this is on eBay at the moment http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/FORD-TRANSIT-A-SE ... 286.c0.m14
It may be worth a try and its an original Ford part!

Went to my local factor for a 72 degree stat last week.
Checked his QH catalogue only to find that theQTH167 was showing as 74 degrees.
Didn't order one.
When home, phoned QH's technical department. They confirmed it is 72 degrees.
Said it must be a print error in the catalogue.
I now have a spare stat.
If you order one, I would suggest you make sure it's a genine QH part, just to be sure.
Regards,
Stuart.
