Relays what to replace them with?

PostPost by: the rolfie » Thu Oct 13, 2005 9:57 pm

Hi I have a 1970 +2s that has four relays under the bonnet near the servo. The two nearest the bulk head are the same and have WEPOO 90032 stamped on them, I need to replace both of these. Are these a replacement part for a Lucas relay?? The other two relays are one a Lucas 6RA which seem common the other is black plastic with no markings at all!!! I am based in the UK if any one can help it would be great and maybe I could drive at njght without my disco head light show!!

Hi Rolfie,
If you are not too concerned about originality then a vehicle relay is a vehicle relay and I'd go with a modern plastic encapsulated relay from web suppiers - or any motor factor - a lot cheaper than a Lucas or Lucas lookalike part.

Apart from specialist relays (not used in Elans) there are basically only a few variations of on/off types - with differences in the pin wiring; and a change-over type. Just make sure the switch current rating is up to the job you have in mind, most are 30 or 40 Amp which will cover most applications though you can get 70 or 80 Amp types and Durite even list a 180 Amp relay.

Most catalogues show the pin designations. Try the web for Vehicle Wiring Products - a company based in Derbyshire - not the cheapest but stock a huge range of car electrics stuff (no connection, just have dealt with them and received quick efficient service).

Rolfie
I agree with Dennis. If the relay is going in the engine bay use a modern type relay as they are sealed and weather proof. I have just been doing some wiring on the car and had to buy some relays they only cost a few pounds from one of the main engineering suppliers.
A couple of websites to look at are:-
