Capacitor for radio supression?

On the n/s engine bay chassis leg of my S4 there is bolted something that looks like a capacitor and nearby a stray black cable leading from the dynamo that was probably attached to it. Does anyone know the function of this and spec/source of a new one? Thanks

You are probably right in thinking it is for radio noise suppression; the commutators in dc motors and dynamos are notorious for creating radio noise.

Not sure of a substitute though, Ordinary ones for electronic equipment might not withstand the temperature, humidity etc of an engine compartment. So automotive ones tend to be encapsulated in bigger containers.

It used to be common to just use a capacitor from a points distributor to accomplish radio suppression. Sometimes more than one. Since the disappearance of AM radio it doesn't seem to be necessary anymore.
