Ignition Switch Retention

PostPost by: Evante » Wed May 15, 2019 10:12 pm

Hi All,

A soggy hello from Upstate New York.

I have a 72 Sprint with the ignition switch mounted on the steering column. The problem is, the white ignition switch part that attaches to the ignition wires falls off of the barrel that holds the ignition key. Does anyone know how the switch is supposed to be held firmly on to the ignition lock barrel?

Thanks for any assistance.

Jay, there is a black plastic shroud that fits from the back & clips over a lip on the barrel.

Let me see if I can find a picture...

This is the best picture I can find of the shroud in position:
columnmountedignitionswitch.jpg and

Ray's website (RDEnt) has a couple of pictures of the ignition switch with shroud:

Thanks Phil,

That is great! Mine has a shroud but the end where it clips on to the housing is missing an inch long piece that would hold it on tight. Now that I know it is the shroud, I just need to find one. I wonder if Ray would sell the shroud without all the rest of the components. I will be calling him in the AM.

Thanks again Phil for your quick and informative response. :D

gents and nerds,

No mentioning of the tiny screw that secures the pressfit. of the cover.
You will see a corresponding hole in the lock

These are very small and elusive ( dont ask ! ) and not the size you will find in your boxes,
Once loosened it is often impossible to relocate but fortunately a cover in good fettle will hold itself.

This falls under the Yogi Berra category of "You can observe a lot by just watching."

Thank you C.Garde, I will look for the hole and/or screw.

mine came loose at a car show. shoved it back in and replaced the cover. later at home but a small bead of silicone adhesive to better attach it. no more problems. did not know about screw, most likely missing anyway.
