Lotus Elan

Distributor Doctor

PostPost by: englishmaninwales » Sat Jun 01, 2019 1:19 pm

Following on from breaking the Lumenition chopper and my ‘Wanted’ post below:

viewtopic.php?f=4&t=44540

I started to think about getting the distributor refurbished, searching I came across ‘Distributor Doctor’ - Anyone used this service, or other UK agents, plus any general advice on refurbishment?

(It’s a 23D 40953A fitted to a standard tune Webber twin-cam with B cams).

Thanks

First class service for distributor refurb, and his ignition components are the best available (condenser / rotor arm / points / distributor cap / leads / coil).

Plus 1 to that but 123 Ignition distributors are superb, though not original.

Totally agree - I wouldn't go anywhere else for ignition related work; really good fella and so helpful.

Another very positive vote for the good Doctor.

I have a 1932 Standard 12, and with the Doctor's help was able to completely rebuild the distributor with new or remanufactured parts he supplied.

Of interest to me was that the 1932 distributor - although cosmetically different - was functionally exactly the same as the distributor in my 71 Sprint (centrifugal advance, rotor arm mounted above the points, distributor cap on top).

No real progress had been made in 40 years.

Dr D was very helpful, at the moment 3 options for me:
NOS genuine Lucas distributor (while stock lasts - that’s the end of them).
Re- manufactured, using good reproduction casting, built up by Dr D with genuine original Lucas internals.
Refurbishment of my existing distributor.

Malcolm - I had the same decision a few months ago. Ultimately decided to have him make up a new distributor based on his NOS and the model/version and curve correct for my engine (40953) and also to supply the bits so I could rebuild my existing distributor to the same spec for a backup for the boot.

What are the typical prices for these three options?
