Wiper switch getting very hot.

The wiper switch on my s3 Elan coupe gets very hot.
This occurs when the ignition is on , but the wipers not switched on to work.
Switching the wipers on , makes no difference to the switch temperature still very hot.
Any ideas would help.
Are new switches avalible?

I suspect that the parking contacts on the actual wipers are not opening properly.

As Bill mentions, the problem could easily be elsewhere - dodgy wiring or the parking contacts, or the motor itself not parking fully.

There were at least two different wiper motors on the Elan, the later model on the S4/Sprint had quite a complicated self park, the earlier motors were more simple.

Which ever it is, unless you are comfortable fiddling with electrics, I would get it seen to before you use the car again. I would also be inclined to remove a battery cable when you leave it parked until it is fixed.

Electrics shouldn't get hot, certainly not when 'off', and as the fusing is virtually non existent on the Elan, fires are a real possibility.

You might want to feel the motor to check if this is getting warm may help with where the current is flowing.
