Head gasket

PostPost by: Robbie693 » Tue Apr 01, 2008 2:08 pm

Hi,

I fitted the new head gasket yesterday and noticed that it wasn't exactly the same as the old one.

The old gasket had small holes for the waterways but the new one has holes the same size as the passages in the head/block.

I got the gasket in a set from Paul Matty's, will the bigger holes make any difference?

Cheers

Better water flow to the thus better cooling???

The last one I fitted (from QED) was like that. So far so good.

Thanks Steve,

That's ok then - I was concerned I'd got the wrong one.

Cheers

My recollection is that you do, indeed, have the "wrong one". The smaller passages in the "correct" one are used to balance heat transfer across the cooling areas of the head.

Possibly a minor issue for anything short of severe operation, but as I recall the thread, the restricted one is the improved model.

Bugger...

As the engine is back together I suppose I'll have to see what happens - what problems should I look for that could be caused by this?

Interesting to follow this discussion, as I will fit a new headgasket myself, in a couple of weeks...

Well I called Paul Matty and they rekon the gaskets they have in stock have the small holes and are somewhat at a loss to explain why mine is different..

They asked me to bring it in and when I told them I had already fitted it said "what did you do that for?"

Exactly

So I'm going to take the old one in and compare. Will report back when I know what's going on
