abnormally high oil pressure

PostPost by: lotusfour » Sat Sep 14, 2019 5:17 pm

Tested the pressure with a spare gauge and the reading is the same, about 80psi. The pump is now out. The 'plunger' moves freely. I have no idea how to determine if the spring is high or regular pressure. there is a fair amount of wear on the impeller and the shaft has about .060 end float. The impressed lable on the body reads IRAUTO, if that means anything. I'm thinking I'll just replace the pump and go from there

A new pump is relatively inexpensive. I?d opt for a new one given that the old one seems worn as well. Get rid of the headache and uncertainty.

You can get a new standard pump without an uprated high pressure kit. Normal stock pressure should be fine for a road car without a high spec engine, I would think.

That rotor is wider than standard so it's probably a high volume + high pressure pump.

When I purchased my car 20 years ago (is it really 20 years ago, wow where has the time gone) the oil pressure was very high, with needle maxed out at the 60psi limit of the guage. I assumed a high pressure pump had been fitted so purchased a new standard pressure pump and when installed the pressure went to the expected ~40psi when driving, although it drops a lot at idle. Visually there was no obvious external difference between the high pressure and standard pressure pumps that I could see.
