Elan S4 clutch

PostPost by: nickspeed » Sat Jan 27, 2024 9:02 am

Good morning all. Took the car for a run yesterday and noticed that the clutch was engaging shortly after the pedal left the floor. After a few miles it packed up altogether leaving me jammed in gear. Turning the engine over on the key and tugging the gearstick I got it in to neutral and waited for the recovery truck! Back home, expecting a leak, was surprised to see the fluid reservoir pretty much full. The pedal has little resistance and somehow feels 'loose'. When depressing it there is no movement of fluid in the reservoir. Have not had a look at the slave cylinder yet. Any thoughts as to what the problem may be? With many thanks, Nick

Thanks. Master cylinder seals? Easier to just buy a new cylinder?

Yes, most likely the seal(s). Best done as a two man job, one would look underneath while another
works the pedal. However, you can use your phone to record the action underneath while you work
the pedal. You'll most likely fine the fork not moving. Start with rebuilding the master and if it still
is not working, then move on to the slave, because it's a bugger to remove.

If the fork is moving, then it is probably an internal (in the bellhousing) problem.

Great. Thank you! Will take a look underneath, and if no movement in the fork, will start with the master. Fingers crossed for nothing untoward in the bellhousing. Thanks again, Nick
