Lotus Elan

Lotus 5 speed bellhousing and tailpiece which mate to +2

PostPost by: Jhsiegle » Wed May 15, 2019 8:48 pm

I have a rebuilt Lotus 5 speed which I would like to put in an Elan. I need the bell housing and tailpiece which,I assume, would have come out of a Plus 2 130/5.

Probably not a very helpful post but thought I share some background that you might or might not know.

You are correct that the bell housing and tail piece need to come from the +2 5 Speed. However the 5 speed box only went in to production after the +2 was withdrawn from the US market. So any +2S130/5 in the US are later imports and are pretty rare, I guess ~10*. So there aren't many of the parts in the US and the likely hood of any spares is low.

You might have better luck in the UK, but given these are the parts needed to convert the relatively common/available but unloved Eclat Lotus 5 speed box they are quite sort after/desirable parts and therefore quite expensive.

I'd think your best bet would be to watch UK EBay and be prepared to have to pay significant price and shipping costs.

Depending on what your aims here is you might be better considering other options for a 5 speed. Like the Voights conversion.

Sorry for the less than positive/helpful message.

* On various register, post here and other sights I think I've come across 5 cars in US (one of which is in my garage). I figure that's at best 50% off the ones here.

Worst case would be to find a good machinist to make an adapter for a 4 speed bellhousing to mate the two.
This is how I obtained mine. Someone made the adapter to mate a 4 speed bellhousing to an Elite box. I then found a 3/4" thick piece of aluminum and had a machinist match the openings
of the bell and transmission. This put the transmission at the proper distance from the face of the bell,
like the 5 speed bellhousing would.

Interesting! What did you do about the tail piece?

I ended up ditching the Elite box, with its unique tailpiece and bought a nicely rebuilt box, with Elan tailpiece but
without a bellhousing, from Dave Bean.
