Road draft tube on S3

Sort of following up on my continuing air box questions, my car 45/7286 has a road draft tube but
also has a rounded back plate with a nipple for a breather to go to the head. Which would be correct:
road draft tube or tube from back plate to head?

Or maybe both, assuming 'overlap' with parts?

This thread could be helpful but the pics are gone. Has anyone saved the pictures from this thread?

It could have been either one, but most likely the breather tube to the road. The parts book indicates the tube to the airbox started with the Strombergs. I converted mine to the tube to airbox because I got tired of the fumes and vapor coming from under the car when sitting in traffic.

BTW, my chassis # is 7279.
There is no cure for Lotus, only treatment.

Vocab English or USA draft or draught.
But what's a Draught/Draft tube please.

Alan,

My understanding is that a draft tube is a piece of pipe that vents crankcase fumes to atmosphere under the car. My car is an early S4 1968 and came with a draft tube.

Hello Alan,
My humble skills with translating American caused me to think he was referring to the breather tube hole at the back of the head that had a rubber 90 deg elbow to a metal tube that allowed the crankcase fumes to escape out the bottom of the engine bay.
There is no cure for Lotus, only treatment.

Ok so 2 different spellings possible.
For sure breathing in Engine vapours or Exhaust is not nice.

Has anyone designed a catch-can or bottle to collect the fluids from that tube?

Since rebuilding my engine with a proper rear crank seal I only have oil drips from the tube after a run, quite small but worth keeping off the floor.

Before I converted my Plus 2 to dry-sump, I took a 500 ml brake fluid bottle, stuffed it with pot scourers to catch the oil, cut a hole near the top to take a hose from a nipple which I tapped into the head breather opening. I emptied the bottle when it was full.

Thanks Foxie, I hadn't thought of replacing the original tube! I know the +2 has more space (and yours being LH drive doesn't have the brake cylinders on the carb side) but I'm wondering where your bottle vents to, is it up with the carbs or down below?

There are a lot of metal drinks bottles
for water nowadays with a screw top that look neat. The bracket off a racing bike holds it well. Till needed to get it off to empty oil...
