Spyder Brass Screws Needed For Gas Tank

I have a NOS "Spyder" aluminum fuel tank for a 1970 Elan S4,SE. The sending unit screws are brass and are thinner than the stock screws for a stock steel tank.
I have tried 3 times to install the sending unit with out leaks. Everytime I try I break a screw in the bottom hole. There must be a burr in that hole at the end. I just installed the sending unit again using permatex Anaerobic gasket maker( Gas proof) on both sides of the cork gasket. It has not dried yet and I just saw the note on the tube that I may need Napa/permatex surface prep Activator. Wish they would have told me that when I was at the parts store.
So I am sure I will be trying to install a 4th time. Almost ready to just weld it shut..
Anyone know the size of the british standard brass screws that Spyder used on the aluminum gas tanks in 1990?? It is about 1/2" long, Brass, and is british standard thread..Maybe between 3-4MM. HELP.. I have e mailed "Spyder", Dave bean with no reply.. If someone in the UK knows the british standard size for the sending unit screw, At least I will know what I am looking for..
Thanks. Tim in the USA 1970 Lotus Elan S4 Se.
Anyone know what the 2 leather straps with snaps are for in the small cubby of the trunk behind the seats?? :(

AFAIK the straps are to secure the hood when folded.
