Right Angle Drive

PostPost by: SENC » Wed Mar 27, 2019 1:16 am

Resurrecting an old thread rather than starting a new one - but looking for guidance on removing the hub/bearing/drive carrier from the gearbox. I have the angle drive unit and fork removed, and can pry the hub out about 3/16" but it is very stuck at that point and I want to avoid breaking anything. Any tips?

Henry

I just used a couple of flat head screwdrivers and applied pressure on opposite sides at the same time, and it did the trick. It feels like it is stuck fast for a while and then just suddenly comes out. A bit fiddly though.

I had exactly the same with getting it out a little bit, then it felt stuck, so yours sounds normal.

Maybe also try rotating the inner drive a bit too, in case the gears are just at an odd angle (shouldn't be, I know).

Still struggling with this - can't get the drive hub more than about 3/16" out despite heavy slow pressure on 2 sides, to the point that pieces of the flange have broken off.

Any ideas, or do I need to start chipping away with a dremel drill?

Well.... if you?re prepared to sacrifice the plug/drive guide then try clamping with a vice grip and spraying wd40 or similar around the edge. Gradually rotating as you go. It should only be a rubber seal holding it in.

Thanks, SAD. Finally grabbed the spindle itself with vice grips and just worked it until it came out. Fortunately I have a plug for that so the inability to reinstall the angle drive isnt a big deal for now. I'm hoping the angle drive is the source of a gearbox leak and that I won't have to pull the engine and gearbox out for seal replacement.

After a nice long ride today, no more leaking from angle drive area, but still dumping a good bit of MTL so looking like engine and gearbkx out to address. Thanks again for help on this.
