Front wheel bearings

PostPost by: sulzeruk » Thu Aug 09, 2007 8:45 am

Morning all, I need to change one of the front wheel bearings on the Plus 2 and see that the stub axles are GT6, was a standard GT6 front wheel bearing set used on them or were they Lotus specific?

To eliminate any doubt on my Elan, I simply used the bearing numbers stamped on the parts themselves to get replacements. I believe that bearing numbers are universal - that is, a given bearing number will be the same item no matter who makes it. At least, it worked that way for me.

True, I also find "The Bearing Manual" to be useful!

The numbers may be the same but the quality differs....

On my spitfire I found the ones with the felt seal worked better than the ones with the rubber seal. The funny thing being the felt ones came from my local car parts place and the rubber ones from Rimmer Bros, and if I remember all in all the price was cheaper to boot!

Always true - that's why I stick with the known brands from my bearing distributor - and his prices are much lower for the exact same items.

re: previous post - the first line was the quote, and the next paragraph was my reply. I guess I really need to learn how this forum functions :(
