Steering joint

PostPost by: Robbie693 » Thu Aug 09, 2007 11:19 am

My MOT tester gave me an advisory on play in the joint between the rack and the column. I have found a guy selling them for Spitfire, Herald and GT6.

Are they the same as those for a Plus 2?

Yes, I believe so. How much can you get them for?

Thanks Matthew.

It's ?12.50, which is half the price of the usual suspects.

Robbie,
How about these parts "SPF1179K Front Steering Coupling Bushing" from this website http://www.superpro.com.au/superpro.html The "Where to buy" link, in the middle of the page, will show you the UK distributor.
Colin.

Hi Robbie

I recently replaced the original coupling on my +2 with a UJ from Spyder -brilliant result but the UJ was slightly longer by a centimetre or 2.

It just meant that I had to move the outer column towards the driver by the additional length to meet the steering wheel at its new location.

If you can find a UJ that is the same length as the original it will be a lot easier.

Cheers

I ordered a coupling - not arrived yet.

Thanks for the link Colin but as mine is a bit grotty anyway I decided to replace the whole thing.

Stuart, the guy I bought it off also does an uprated solid joint which is supposed to be a Group 4 rally part for a MK1 Escort. This also is a bit longer than the original. The steering wheel is a bit close anyway for my shape so I bought an original design one (Looks like it anyway!) to hopefully keep the wheel in the same place. Fingers crossed.

Unless you have an early plus 2 with the Ford shaft you can accomodate a longer U joint in an Elan or Plus 2 by adjusting the sliding coupling in the middle of the Triumph shaft so the steering wheel does not have to move.
