Rear inner bearing play

PostPost by: The Veg » Sat Apr 13, 2019 10:56 pm

Pardon me if this is a total nOOb question, but I've not dealt with a lot of bearings and need to learn.

Should a new rear inner bearing have this much play? It turns perfectly smoothly, no notchy spots, and there is no play perpendicular to the axis of rotation.

Have a look:

So is it probably OK since it turns totally smoothly, or have I buggered it? This is the one I installed backward and have now removed.

I set up a spare new inner rear bearing in a vice like you did and have around 0.020 inch / 0.5 mm of axial float in the inner versus outer race. This is typical for a single row deep groove ball bearing and different brands may have a little different end float. Visually it looked much like your video.

The spare I had was a Japanese FBJ bearing

That bearing looks OK to me.
