26R 5 peg wheels

PostPost by: zeca » Wed Aug 28, 2019 2:27 pm

Hello,

I bought a used set of 26R 5 peg wheels and the 26R spinners. When installing the wheels in the car, i realised that the spinner don?t go at the end of the thread of the Hub.

This set is from Kelvedon, They told me to remove 5 or 10mm inside the wheel....

Any help on this?

Best Regards

I don't have one of my wheels off the car but even 5-10mm doesn't appear to be enough? And then there's the issue of does the wheel have enough meat to safely allow it. Is it a matter of hub/spindles not being long enough? I take it this is not a true 26R but some adaptation? Here are a couple pixs of my Series 2 front and rear, the latter with the protruding spindle/hub tube, albeit rusty.

Does anyone have a set of 26R 5 peg that can tell me the depth of the wheel? Mine is about 35mm as image above.

thanks

Yes, I have a set of brand new ones and they are the same. I haven't decided what to do about it yet but I am certainly not happy with only half the amount thread being used. I would not be happy machining the mounting face either as that will make the offset worse.

Has anyone had a go at solving this problem of not enough threads on the hub?

RE: Number of threads.

Carroll Shelby's book may address that question.

There is a professional book on fasteners, but, at $300+ probably not many people have it.

I seem to remember that something like 4 threads engaged provides sufficient strength.

Perhaps Rohan can give us guidance.

Cheers,

I think you mean Carroll Smith.

Carrol Smiths advice on threaded fasteners (from memory, so beware) was 1.5 diameters for thread engagement, with a minimum of 1 diameter. I do not recall if he provided any advice on knock off nuts, which may well be different.

In any case, I would not feel comfortable with only 4 threads engaged on a heavily loaded wheel nut. I would be looking for a least one thread past the end of the nut, or a thread engagement length equal to at least the diameter of the threads.

The above setup appears to have a problem (hub too short for this specific application?) and I also would not drive at speed on 4 alloy threads, but if I may, "a thread engagement length equal to at least the diameter of the threads" is clearly impossible with the stock KO nuts, that have a threaded depth about half of their diameter (and are engaged on steel wheel 7 to 8 threads I would say)...

I agree, Gordon who bought my S2 put Kelsport 26R 5 peg wheels on and it had only a few threads holding it on, I suggested best not to drive it.

For my mind a poorly engineered solution and an accident waiting to happen

I think all agree that there's not enough threads on the hubs for this setup. What I need is a good and safe way of extending the threaded section on the hubs.

I have had these Kelvedon wheels on my car 21 years now with no issues. My TTR spinners have 11 total threads, with between 8 and 9 engaged. Given that Cobra Halibrands only have about 9 total threads, I don’t think it’s a problem.

My wheels certainly do not have as many exposed threads like the photo at the top of this thread. Perhaps spinner differences?

TTR replica 26R wheels and spinners. Full engagement of threads front and back. Pretty much the same as "jabingb" 's true 26R.
