Zetec Wiring Loom +2 Brakes

Recently I bought a +2 with no engine or chassis (very cheap)

I intend to do the spyder cars zetec conversion but using the standard injection and engine management system from a mondeo.

Has anyone got experience of removing the Mondeo engine management system wiring loom.

Having had a quick look at a pick and pull scrap yard there looks to be lots of things I can lose along the way like the air injection pump (and related vacuum controller)

I will obviously do this in the donor car before removing the engine to ensure I have a working system.

I quite like the brakes in the original +2 are these good for 150 BHP (road use and the occasional track day)

Paul,

Check out <a href='http://www.bgsoflex.com/megasquirt.html' target='_blank'>http://www.bgsoflex.com/megasquirt.html</a> - shows how to build your own ecu and gives advice on various aspects of engine management. If you don't want to buy off the shelf throttle bodies and ecu this route may give you a better result that keeping the Mondeo gear, which to my mind looks overly complex and restrictive for the Plus 2.

Just my opinion though - keep us posted on how you get on with whatever method you decide on!

Reading the asm code, amazing what it takes to simply determine, when and how long to spray fuel and wait.

Hi

When I spoke to someone about this they told me the ridiculous number of sensors that the mondeo system uses. If you miss any out it runs in limp mode. Sounded tooooo complex to even think about.

I am strengthening a standard chassis to take the mondeo engine. I have not really considered the induction yet. Please let me know if you find a good solution! I think that using re-jetted webber carbs might be the way to go. I dream about bodging a more simple fuel injection system from another car to fit.........

Good Luck

Paul,
Not saying it's impossible to do having done a couple of rover v8 efi transplants but a Mondeo system is going to be more complex and time consuming.
You might want to consider a pair of webber 40DCOE's instead, at least to start with. As in proper tune there only about 5% less efficient than fuel injection and if you have trouble getting the engine to run you can rule out it being a problem caused by a missing sensor or some other electronic fault with the modeo system.

But if your'e good with electronics, fault finding and are patient then why not have a go !

Brakes shouldn't be a problem though :)

Mega squirt looks GOOD :) I think it will take longer to get running correctly than simplifying the mondeo system which will probably be more reliable (I hope).

I intend to get a complete running mondeo rather than just an engine and do the simplification while the engine is still fitted to the donor car.

A lot of the sensors seem to be to do with idle control and emissions which was the main problem I had when doing a gas conversion on a Jag.

If I could find an accurate circuit diagram it would help a lot. (any suggestions) I will try using the Haynes manual.

If I fail I think the Mega Squirt system will be the solution.

I cannot help but think somebody somewhere must have a simplified mondeo system wiring diagram.

A further thought is, if you're in the UK, to have a look at this months 'Practical Performance Car' magazine. They have a feature on making your own throttle bodies and also suggest that it's possible to convert a pair of Webers by fitting injectors to the carb bodies. Has anybody tried this? I've recently bought (but not yet fitted) throttle bodies and an emerald ecu for my Zetec but I'm tempted to take the DIY route for my next project!

Ooooo I like the sound of that idea. I have some extra 40 DCOE's and a dremel....................down to WHSmith I go!

Has anyone put a 1600 in out of an Escort(the alloy one)in a plus two. You can easily get 170+bhp out of one and it is lighter!

My Plus 2 had a 1600 fitted when I bought it a couple of years ago. Not sure what the gearbox was but the lever came through about six inches further back than standard. I was tempted to keep the 1600 when I rebuilt the car but it was a non runner and in the end I decided to go for a Zetec when I found a low milage one for ?250. Proves it can be done though...
