Front Brakes And Suspension

Hi all

During many years ownership I've never been able to stop the front pads rattling. the holes for the pins are not oval/worn and I've experimented with various springs .

Anybody with experience of the definitive cure?

Second problem (irritation really)- any fixes for the front suspension "crashing". You can assume that everything is as it should be and I know (I think) it's caused by the springs rubbing against the damper body. Grease on the springs works for a while but then the problem returns. Incidentally I don't have the shrouds which cover the top part of the springs so I'm guessing this is part of the trouble but has anyone come up with some easy fixes.

Help would be appreciated.

I have not had the pads rattle, but I have had them squeal loud enough to scare drivers on the other side of a buys intersection. Different pads and chamfering the leading edge so they could bed in right helped that.

A number of people have made plastic tubes for around the dampers to keep the spring from from hitting the damper. This seems to work for them.

I have a problem with the sway bar drop links hitting the chassis. I am pretty sure this is due to my bar being a little tweaked, so hopefully the other bar sitting in the garage will fix that problem.

I never thought of "wrapping" the dampers- I might give that one a try.

Re the brakes- it seems that at one time anti-rattle springs were listed at various motor fators/brake specialists- I spoke to Classoicar Automotive who suggested going into a Halfords branch armed with a few measurements and picking suitable springs. I did try the ones used on the Scimitar Gte but these didn't work as well as I expected.

I too have squealling breaks- especially when they are warm and I am lightly breaking. Not the way to get attention What type of pads did you use to solve the problem?

Guys,

There is a shim that fits between the caliper piston and the brake pad. This is designed to stop brake squeal. The usual suspects, SJ Sports Cars or Christopher Neil stock them. They work for me.
