My first Elan!

PostPost by: Karter7 » Mon Dec 11, 2023 7:14 am

Hi all,
I have been lurking on here for years. I’ve wanted an Elan forever and finally found an early car that fitted the bill.
More by sheer luck, it seems I’ve bought an early S1 Elan. Chassis 26/0155
It doesn’t seem to need much and I’m enjoying the process to get it registered here in Sydney, Australia.
Everyone is really helpful and I feel like Elan ownership is like a secret club!
I’m no expert, but it seems quite original. It has been repainted some 25 years ago, but is still looking very nice!
I can’t wait to drive it soon.
Here are some photos.
Regards Daniel

What ever you do, don't run that car without an airbox Dan. That is a disaster waiting to happen. If you don't have the original, very expensive, fit a set of K & N's or similar. And make sure you carry a decent fire extinguisher in the car at all times.

Enjoy, looks lovely.

Hi Leslie,
Thanks.
I’ve been trying to source a Airbox! A member on here has offered a loan of one.
I’ll check extinguisher too.
The car came fitted with foam air socks. Acceptable until Airbox fitted?

Welcome Daniel,

It looks as if you have an interesting car collection. The Elan 1600 will, I'm sure, be the crowning pinnacle of the collection!

Your car was factory built and one of the first three dealer supplied Elans' imported into Australia, leaving the Lotus factory in October 1963, delivered to Geoghegan & Sons Pty Ltd in Sydney.

I hope you have a lot of fun with it.

The foam air socks are a definite no. Petrol can pool on the horizontal body under the carbs. The foam can absorb some of that as well as petrol mist and is a well known fire hazard.

Hi Tim,
Wow, incredible information. Now I’ll need to get a Geoghegan windscreen sticker!
I assume the Lotus historian can provide its original colour?

I’m already having fun. Only driven it 1 meter in/out of the garage. Too many cops near me to take it around the block. It’s a $1500 fine if the car is unregistered. I have many passers by when I’m playing in my garage. Everyone who has seen it so far LOVES it! I do have a nice assortment of cars, but may need to sell one or two. Storage in Sydney is difficult. I just couldn’t let this Elan pass me by when I was told about it being for sale. One look and I was smitten. It even came with its original handbook!

I ditched the filter socks.

Kind regards
Daniel
