Dee,
Is it common? Well, no and yes. Not that high percentage of cars have a replacement body (more have a replacement sub-frame). But, if that was what was required to get a running car, then yes. There are examples of bodies that have been pieced together from one front section and a different rear section.
Does it affect the car's value? If you are using it as a daily driver, then probably no. The important thing is a good looking and reliable car. If you are thinking of concours, then maybe yes. But, your VIN is probably not a candidate for that.
Try to find out why the body was replaced.
There are many members on here who are much more expert in this than I am.

Dee,
Does the car have the original chassis and original engine?
You can e-mail me at work [email protected] with the engine number fitted now and any other details and I can check to see if the engine is original.

The car you are looking at was first registered in Glasgow on 22.6.67. The S4 had not been introduced at that stage so it must have been a S3 when it left the factory. (By the way, last date of taxation was Sep 91).
