Thanks for the update on GKN's Europa and the history of the USA. You may know that the UK is made up of 5 countries: England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and Yorkshire.

While in a Europa mood, does anyone know anything about the Lotus 52? There is one being restored in a private garage locally and, if I remember correctly, it has a Lotus 47 body with TC engine, a Ford lorry gearbox and twin wishbone rear suspension hung on some crude chassis extension. Only one is registered as being made yet a Porsche forum member in the USA also has one and posted a photo but no details when the subject of Europa came up there. It is alleged to have been in an exhibition there so perhaps was knocked up specially. But what was the idea, to get rid of the Europa's heavy rear wheel locators?

As a New Englander I am at ease with abuse and criticism from Texicans. However the notion the New York could be considered a New England state is just plain treason.

A great state to live in and to visit - great people and always appreciated the independence I felt in TX. If it only had the Atlantic nearby it might be my favorite, but too much salt water in my veins. That, and ther is just a small ego issue in Tejas...

To me it seemed like more than ego, more like downright provincial jingoism. I never could figure out why they were so attached to a place that was mostly flat and ugly and stupendously hot. I've met small-town Texans who were fiercely proud of the fact that they'd never been more than 1 or 2 hundred miles from where they were born!

On top of that, I figured out that all that shit-kicking cowboy swagger attitude is just a front for a rather fragile psyche, as illustrated by all the overcompensation with the big pickup trucks and other un-necessary large things including the above-mentioned attitude. Telling too, back in the days when we all had wired telephones, Texas was the only state in which more than half of wired telephone customers used caller-ID. What are they so nervous about that they feel a need to avoid certain callers?

But to be certain, there are still lots of wonderful people there and I'm still friends with a bunch of them. My fiance (not a native Texan) lives in Fort Worth, although the plan is to move her here before I'm too old to care.

...this started as a thread with a 70s Lotus poster, how has it become a discussion about the merits or otherwise of US states and their residents?

Lots of bars in Texas I would be careful about saying some of the stuff in this post - especially since it is now legal to carry concealed or not so concealed guns in bars in most of Texas, used to be banned in bars when i lived there for good reason
