It seems some regions in France are using to change for 90 kph to 80 kph as an excuse to remove their radar warning signs completely!!

https://www.francebleu.fr/infos/transports/certains-radars-automatiques-fixes-d-indre-et-loire-ne-seront-bientot-plus-signales-par-un-panneau-1530031128

Just back from a week driving in Normandy, no problem with 'les flics' at all but I did notice France has become roundabout crazy, makes driving in Milton Keynes look easy as at least they are a few hundred metres apart!!

For the fixed Radars here in France if you are using your GPS you get a warning showing their position.
On my GPS it says be careful of your speed. I have set my GPS with an English person speaking.
That way when driving with my French friends they don't understand English so i don't have more than one person giving me directions
I think the mini roundabouts are subsidized by Europe.

.. it seems the French claim they invented the roundabout building about 500 new ones every year. Just as well the Elan corners so well..,

They are une catastrophe because 99.9% of people will only use the outside lane even if they are driving round it several times looking for their correct exit.

And actually they are in the right because once on the roundabout priorit? ? droite applys and the vehicle in the outside lane will always be the innocent party in any collision.

And then there are many in built up areas where the appraching traffic has priorit?, you have to stop on the roundabout to allow any and all approaching traffic to enter.

Be carefull out there, I have seen many convoys of UK reg sports and classic cars pass straight through junctions in our town oblivious to the fact that they should have stopped to let the traffic enter from what they percieve as a side road, the locals round here are mean enough to T bone one of the vehicles in a long convoy rather than wait any longer.

Same sort of thing in Germany. Even in a shopping carpark, give way to the right..!! The cause of many an insurance claim and wrote off car.
Coming back to UK saved me over ?2k a year on premiums.

Bonsoir Chancer,
Sorry but you are wrong when you are on a roundabout in France you do not have to stop for the others to join.
This is because when you join a roundabout in France you have the Sign "c?der la passage" (give way).

The people already on the roundabout have the priority in France like in UK , except of course the rotation is the opposite .

Alan is of course 100% right - the person on the roundabout has priority.

That said...my local roundabout near Paris is an exception...and it is not indicated in any way (!) so might I suggest that the basic priorit? ? droite is the best rule to note even if you don't like / agree with it.

I have lived in France for 30 years and not had a scrape so far.

But when I was 18 in Britain...a little old lady seriously damage my car when she misunderstood a roundabout in Harlow...(a low speed, unavoidable head on accident !).

My warning about lowered speed limits comes as it is easy to get the red mist when having a "burn-up" on the way to a race meeting. Perhaps take a wise passenger !

Hi Alan.

I did use the words "some roundabouts", oops no I didn't I said "there are many in built up areas........" which there are indeed that have no stop or cedez le passage signs and are P?D, the most famous example is in Paris but its name evades me.

In my town there are many P?D 4 way junctions where the streets are a grid pattern, no stop signs, line markings or Cedez le passage, everyone except visitors know they are P?D but many are being replaced by rond points where the same priorit? applys and they are catching out even the French.

Just found the definitive article, all roundabouts are P?D, its the gyratory junctions (carrefour gyratoire) where you have to give way to traffic already on the roundabout.

Ah Paris now thats interresting on the p?riph?rique the best thing is to stay in the overtaking lane.
Because everyone joining the P?riph?rique has the priority

It was in Harlow, Essex and the old dear was lost.

I was driving an ancient 2CV at the time and had stopped...but she still hit me!

Just found this government website showing speed cameras in France. It's strange the French ban maps showing cameras in cars but then publish their own map (I wonder if there is a mobile version)? :D
