Made a blanking panel for the bottom of the radiator ... quite pleased with the result. Only took 45 years to get around to it.

Haven't gone for any real good rides in the Sprint since LOG, so top down cruise today in the chilly Philly area winter air. Came home, topped off the oil and brake fluid (the SAVY unit warning light was flickering). Can't find any hydraulic leaks, even in the cockpit firewall where MC pushrod comes through. Also installed the tonneau cover now for cold winter drives to keep the interior nice and warm. Gosh I love driving my Lotus! :D

Tore down and cleaned a used steering rack I picked up a while back for parts or for back-up. Looks good enough to rebuild as a back-up.

Also went through bins of parts I've accumulated to identify bits to be reconditioned over the winter and to get the rest organized. In doing so found 3 old donuts that don't look used. I've converted to CVDS and don't see going back, so happy to share these with someone who still uses them. Since I don't know the history of them (they were in a box that came with the car), I'll pass them along to anyone interested for just shipping.

Have they still got the factory straps on them, that would be a definite indication that they have not been used?

Finally got the old girl back in one piece with help from VinceReynard. She?s been on stands this last three months. In desperate need of a clean! Went for a spin and noted a bunch of new unhealthy sounding noises, including whirring from the gearbox in 5th, whining from the diff and more propshaft vibration.

On the plus side...
  • all the suspension clonking is gone. The roll bar bushes, being the last ones to be replaced, solved it.
  • New dash and instruments look lovely.
  • Steering wheel now rock steady after new bushes fitted in the column.
  • So far no oil leaks detected.
  • New gearshift is a delight. Snicksnicksnick and that?s a 5 speed box!
  • Clutch still heavy but engages better with less jerkiness (new clutch plate and cover was fitted

So lots to be happy about despite the need to pull the engine and box again (for access to the propshaft bolts on the gearbox flange).

I got a 4" x 1/2" piece of flat aluminum to make an adaptor plate to connect my carbs to the Throttle Body that I bought from a Great member on this site. Tomorrow I will make what is missing and have all I need to continue with my S4 SE Restoration. Rainy day here tomorrow so shop time is on he agenda.

Took the cam cover off and measured the clearances. A bit too tight - one exhaust valve at 8 thou and two inlet valves at 4 thou. So I'll have to do 'em.

Also pulled the diff as it's off to Road & Race Transmissions in Kent for an overhaul next week. I need to remove the propshaft as it has play in the sliding joint and is vibrating at speed. On a Plus 2 that's an engine & box out job I suspect, and I have only just got the unit back in there.

Hi JonB

If your only wanting to replace the sliding prop shaft coupling the whole prop shaft can be removed without removing the engine and gearbox. If however you have wear on the gearbox output shaft then they will have to come out.
I would remove the prop shaft first anyway as the wear could be in the U/J
Procedure is in the manual

Good luck

Hi John

Already done. I had a new sliding joint welded on and new U/Js fitted for ?120. There is still a bit of vibration at motorway speeds but I?m not sure if it?s the shaft or rear wheel balance. Probably the shaft as it wasn?t balanced (just checked for true running). Unfortunately the guy doing the work lost his balancing rig to a fire. I went ahead anyway because the job wasn?t too dear.

Cheers
JonB

I drove my 67 DHC four miles into town to pick up a growler of local Hefe Weizen for my wife, but this was actually 24 hours ago.
