Factory Body to Chassis shims ??

PostPost by: type50 » Wed Nov 29, 2023 4:35 am

Hi Everyone,

A question for those who have previously removed / refitted Lotus bodies.

Do these wedge shims (pics supplied) look like original factory items ?

The markings on the shims says "6 1/2". The full height of the spacer is ~ 5.5 mm.

I lifted the body off my 1968 +2 in ~1989 and I suspect that these didn't get put back where they were meant to be (at the front strut towers).

Thanks in advance.

No, I don`t think so. Those are the washers used on `I` section rolled steel joists to correct the taper on the flange.
You need flat washer or shims.

Yep, don't recall those when I did mine.

Hi
No shims on my 1971+ s130, none required when I replaced body.
What makes you think they should be fitted

Not sure about +2, but I've had the body off of several Elans, and you can either use shims (I just use large diameter stainless washers) where the body and frame meet, or listen to sound of cracking GRP as you tighten the mounting bolts. On the cars I've done, it's only a couple/three of the mounting points that want shimmed.

Yes,
Or if no Shims you can have contact with ilside of Bonnet and Camcover. Then cry when you see "Stars" in the nice new Paint/Gelcoat. Easier to have contact with the "Big Valve" Camcover on the front corner.
Stick a blob of Plasticine on cover, lower Bonnet gently and check for clearance.

Thanks for all the responses and advice.
Yes, I have a clearance issue between the cam cover and the hood.
